I have been suffering with dental issues for the past year and in need for some advice/help.

I had an infection -root canal then an extraction upper right, the same again with the upper left.

Then the teeth next to them that were root filled in 2006, were infected around the root filling so one of them was also pulled. The other one will be pulled in 3 weeks.

So far I have had 4 teeth pulled within a year. 3 the past 6 months. Each time i have been in they have stated all the teeth are fine and within weeks i am back in and another one is biting the dust.

Also after an extraction a socket was infected, after antibiotics we assumed it had gone but there is still sensitive swelling and bits of bone coming out.

All my gums upper and lower right are swollen and i have tingly feelings that come and go all over my face. now they are saying a tooth next to the ones taken out might be infected from the top but it also might just be my anatomy, so they are going to leave it. also that my sinuses might be infected which can cause the pressure pains.

I am very fed up and depressed about it all, the amount of painkillers and antibiotics i have taken the past year is not healthy and the slightist nerv pain of feeling in a tooth, i feel the adrenallin in my whole body and the sheer panic.

I believe there is something going on that they are not seeing. As i do not understand how they can send me away saying all is fine and within weeks i am in, in an emergency in pain.

I am at an army dentist and have seen all 6 in the centre, I am debating to go private and pay silly amounts.

Any advice would be appreciated

PS. I do brush and floss

What military service? I was a US Navy dentist and we did excellent dentistry in my clinic.

Without x-rays, I cannot tell you what went wrong. Failures of root canals are very rare. Did you in fact have the root canals finished and the teeth restored before you lost them?

Yes the root canals were finished with a large filling and fine in 2006.

We are with the British Army in Germany. I went to a German dentist today I was told I have gum desease as I am a smoker and that could be the cause? So today I have bought Corsodyl mouthwash. I am hoping that will help the random swelling and sores on the gums.

He also said there are infections above where the root filling is and also on the upper right side and he said its chronic and looks like its been there a while but not seen. also the tingly feelings over my face ear and head is most likely the nerves as i have had so much treatment done in such a short amount of time.

I would go to him for treatment, but I am uk health insured and to see a German dentist I would have to pay private. That check up alone cost me 75 euros. But I needed a second opinion. But maybe it is worth paying if its going to save me teeth and stop any future problems?

Also he was confused as to why they have not given me antibiotics after the extractions, only before during pain. Is this normal of should I be taking them after each extraction?

I am sorry to have to tell you this, but British dentistry is the worst in Europe. I treated quite a few Brits here and while I was in the Navy in Lebanon. The dentistry in Germany used to be some of the best in Europe, although it has declined a bit due to low government mandated fees. If you can't afford German dental treatment, I got an excellent dentist frind in Timasoara, Romania.

Your root canals could be failing because they were not done well. I would need x-rays to prove that. No mouthwash will help if this is indeed the problem. Either redo the root canals or extract the teeth.

It is not usual to prescribe antibiotics before or after extractions, unless an infection cannot be brought under control. Anitibiotics have side effects, especially in women.

Evenutally, Europeans like you will have to decide whether you want crumby, absysmal health care provided by your government, or pay for decent care out of pocket. The NHS has ruined dental care in Britain. I went to a National Dental Society convention in Birmingham and was aghast at the level of average dental care provided to the average Brit.

I totally agree with Dr HK and what he says about UK holds true also for French dentistry. From what you say I realize that your periodontal condition has never been addressed whereas it is essential to do so before any oral surgery procedure should be performed to avoid contamination of the surgical site and any infectious complication. As a general rule, root canals should only be done by experts or not be done at all as not cleaning and filling properly the root canal system will inevitably lead to infecting the surrounding bone. It has been proven that over 35% of RCT performed by French SS dentists where not adequate. I guess similar conclusions could be applied to any dental team practicing "mass" endodontics.
