Hi,
Three weeks ago, I had an apicoectomy on a bottom molar. Last week, I noticed a bump at my gum around the treated tooth. It looked like a fistula. It has a white spot on top that looked like an opening. Anyone knows what could this be? I really hope it’s not an indication of failed apicoectomy because I really don’t want to lose any of my teeth. Thank you for your help.

Well, there is a chance that what u r describing is what we call a sinus or a fistula and the reason why these develop is because of an abscess (pus) formation process going on somewhere underneath that and this almost always happens because of an infection (bacteria and other tiny micro-organisms).
Now with every surgery - even minor surgeries - there is a risk of wound infection. I would assume you've had the apicoactemoy with some sort of a new root filling done and proper isolation was made to prevent re-infection from the top of the tooth?
whether it had failed or not I am not entirely sure but a clinical examination of that would be able to give u a proper diagnosis to that.

Sometimes apicos heal with a bump that is a scar, but it it has a white spot in the center and is a little sore to the touch, it is probably a fistula. Return to the treating dentist to have it evaluated.

i had surgery over a root canalled tooth many years ago. i was left with a fistula. i went back to the surgeon who had performed the original procedure. he did some surgery to close the opening. it didnt work. there was this smell from the hole. sadly, i let it go. it took a lot of years, but eventually an abscess developed. i had to have the tooth pulled, and had lost a lot of bone above it. i think the practitioner should evaluate your fistula.
