Filling lodge into the gum

Hello there!

For the past week, I felt pain whenever I floss between teeth #28 and #29. The gum on that area was sore and tender. Tooth #29 had a cavity and was root canalled and filled about a month ago. The dentist said the new filling lodged into the gum and caused an infection. He performed a gum surgery. He then put on a temporary crown.

It has been four days since the surgery and my gum still bleeds and hurts. It’s swollen quite a bit. Is this normal after a gum surgery or does it sound like the gum is still infected? Should I be taking antibiotics? The dentist did not prescribe me any medicine. I would be thankful for any advice.

I wish you could be a little more clearer on the specifics here. Did you have a temporary filling after your root canal that was irritating your gums and got infected later? Well since your title says this was a broken piece that got lodged in your gums, I'm guessing this 'gum surgery' you refer to, could be an an abscess your dentist drained?

Well, you should have been on antibiotics through this 'gum surgery' and I'm confused as to why you haven't been prescribed any. The antibiotics would definitely aid in fighting the infection and help repair the gum tissue relatively sooner and better. Have your dentist prescribe you some because the next time something like this happens, it'd be a lot more aggressive and worse than what it is now. Good luck!

Check and see if there was some cement left in the gums around the temporary crown, or if it is rough. Better than antibiotics that go all over the body is an irrigation syringe by which you can deliver hydrogen peroxide under the gum margins.

@Novocaine, yes I got a temporary filling on tooth number 29 after a root canal procedure. When the gum around this tooth became sore, I went back to the dentist for check-up. It turns out, a piece of the filling lodged into the gum and it got infected. A gum surgery was done because of the damage to the gum from the filling (per my dentist).

@Dr. Henry, it does not feel rough. The gum is red and had swelled a little. It still hurts and burns a bit.
