Extra tooth in my gum, help!!!

Hey there!

When I looked into my mouth in the mirror, there seemed to be a growing tooth in my gum, right underneath my right nostril. I can feel the bump with my tongue. It hurts when I press it and my gum on this part is itchy sometimes. I went to the dentist, he took X-ray and he did see the extra tooth. I am 14 years old and I've gotten all my adult teeth already. I am scheduled to get braces soon and I have to get four teeth extracted for this. The dentist said, when the four teeth that need to be extracted are removed, he will cut a hole in my upper gum on the right side to give way for the tooth. The braces will pull the tooth down into the extraction hole of one of the four extracted teeth.

The idea of cutting a hole in my gum terrifies me. Did this happen to anyone? Does the procedure hurt? Please help me! I am really afraid of needles and surgeries. Any help or advice you could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Dear Redlakelady, You have what is called supernumerary teeth. The procedure won't hurt and it will be under anesthesia. After the extractions you may experience discomfort as your wounds heal and different people respond differently on how fast they heal. At the end you will have a beautiful smile so it is all worth it. Just make sure to rinse often to keep the extractions areas clean. You will be given antibiotic and pain relief medicine for easier transition.
