8 days ago i started off with terrible jaw pain, i could hardly open my mouth. I work nights and im a nurse so im usually stressed anyway. I clench my teeth at night sometimes and wake up with a headache but it normally goes away. I have had this issue for days now. I went to the dentist on monday and had tests done and they gave me a jaw pain protocol. i followed it- taking 800mg ibuprofen q4hPRN and eating soft foods, not talking much, and wearing an NTI guard (while my bite soft is being made). I then got no sleep my face/jaw hurt so bad. So i went back on tuesday and they did xrays- since i had two fillings done on the top upper left side 3 weeks prior= they wanted to make sure i didnt need a root canal. they said everything looked good. so he gave me some muscle relaxers. i took them tues night and then again on wednesday 1500mg each time. I then worked wed night and had no issues, only took ibuprofen once. then on thursday i did not take the muscle relaxers since i didnt want to feel loopy since id only sleep a little between shifts. i went to work and had to deal with some stressful issues. 3 hours later i could not bite down on the back upper left tooth. its excruiating. and since the pain has been unbearable. i am coming up on 24 hours. I have pain when i even touch the tooth with my finger or a qtip. the worst pain of my life was when i drank a glass of water, cold sensitive like whoa! then i put orajel on it- NOW THAT WAS THE WOST! it took 15 min of me screaming and crying into a pillow to get thepain to go away. my jaw still hurts but now this tooth is causing me pain. when i touch the outer side of the tooth closest to my cheek it is really brusing like pain. when i touch with my tongue to the inner side it doesnt hurt. but i cant bite down or else its the worst. the dentist called in amoxicillin and tylenol with codiene. i cant get to the dentist until monday and possible wednesday due to work and the holiday weekend. anyone have any idea what is going on? i really dont want to go to the emergency room but i seriously cannot take this!!!!

Writing in paragraphs would do so much for the readability of your post.

Sometimes grinding/clenching causes pain this severe, and cold sensitivity to. I had a case like this last week. The fact that your pain responded to a muscle relaxants leads me to believe the first diagnosis of TMJ disorder was correct.

For cases this severe I usually refer to a physical therapist with experience treating TMD. Ask around at the hospital and see if you can find one. Your dentist will need to give you a written referral.

Hopefully the physical therapy, probably including TENS, will get you better along with muscle relaxants and heat packs. Once it quiet downs, you can get a complete upper splint, NOT a NTI

If you are married, soak a hot washcloth on the sore side, then let you husband massage the muscles in spasm until they relax. I must do this for my wife, who is a terrible tooth grinder.
