Dry socket pain gets intense, please help

Ten days ago, I had wisdom teeth extraction. Three days later, I developed a dry socket because I once smoked after the surgery. The pain became unbearable so I went to the oral surgeon. He irrigated the dry socket and packed it with medicated gauze. I have already been to the dentist two times to have the dressing changed. It’s been a week, but the pain is still terrible. It seems to get worse each day. The pain radiates from the socket to the jaw up to my ears and temples. The painkiller would only give me temporary relief. Is there something wrong? Is it safe to ask for a stronger pain medicine? I have been on painkiller since the surgery. Does anyone else have similar experience with dry socket? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
