Do I need a root canal?

Hi there!

I have been getting pain on tooth #13 for the past few weeks. When I went to the dentist to have it looked at, he said the tooth needed a crown.

When the crown was put on, the pain was terrible. The gum around the tooth was also sore and tender. The pain gets worse day by day. Does it sound like I am due for a root canal? The dentist said before that based from the x-ray, I don’t need a root canal treatment. Thanks for your input.

Almost never does putting a crown on a tooth stop pain, unless the problem is a cracked tooth. Cutting a tooth down is one of the most irritating things you can do to a pulp. So yes, unless there are undiagnosed gum problems or pain referred from sinusitis, the most probable outcome will be to have a root canal.
