My Dentist want to do deep cleaning on my teeth and I have not had this done before and would like to know what it is and how necessary it is??
Dear Lebanonjack,
In Europe, in fact, we understand by this a periodontitis treatment and I would assume it's the same in the USA too.
Why "in fact"?
We lag a bit behind the USA. Normal oral hygiene has always been different to periodontitis treatment in the USA whereas with us it was always a bit unclear. It's only recently that we have started to distinguish between them.
In Europe in the past we used to use the term "deep cleaning" for what we now call dental hygiene.
In any case, I would definitely ask your dentist again as he will certainly be able to explain it. You can also see more about the subject in the periodontitis video.

Deep cleaning involves scaling and root planing to remove any germs or bad elements. It is done to get rid of any periodontal diseases. However, it is also done before some surgical procedures.

Well, if it is HONESTLY coded, deep cleaning (aka "Scaling and root planing") is reserved for cases where there is periodontal damage and at least SOME pocketing with tartar BELOW the gumline. It USUALLY requires numbing of the mouth. It USUALLY requires more than on appointment. It is designed to restore a mouth with moderate or advanced gum disease to a higher level of health.
Be aware, however, is the coding is often misused in the US these days. Dentists who sign on with crappy insurance plans that pay next-to-nothing "upcode" most regular cleanings to "scaling and root planing" so they will not lose money. I see patients like this nearly every week. That is why the first qualification of any dentist you choose should be honesty, and the second professional competenece.

I received a series of digital x-rays apparently revealing tartar build-up. I needed a deep gum cleansing. It's not gum disease.but stated that the tartar was obvious between my teeth and eventually would lead to loose teeth and highly recommended the treatment. T
