Cracked temporary crown

User Level:
Patient

Dear all,

I had a temporary crown put on a root-canalled tooth about a year ago. Due to financial issues, I did not return for the permanent crown right away. Luckily, the temporary crown held up so well and looked perfect. However, yesterday, the crown cracked off. I already booked an appointment with the dentist but I was just curious if the permanent crown could still be placed. Does anyone know what should I expect at the dentist? Thank you for any information you can give me.

Hello,
Since it has been a year it is difficult to tell you exactly what to expect. If there is no decay on the prepared tooth that was under the temporary crown then you should be just fine with getting your final crown with no addition work done.

The dentist will just remove the cement or composite material holding your temporary crown and place permanent on. I hope this helps.

It could work, but it is likely the crown will require a lot of grinding on it to be able to fit. Temporaries wear, and teeth drift, if permanent crowns are not cemented within a reasonable period of time.
