Cavities after braces came off

I wore braces for nearly three years. Seven months ago I had them removed. When they were removed, I noticed cavities mostly at the back part of my teeth. Since then I brushed and flossed more. When I went to the dentist today for cleaning, she told me I have two huge cavities on my back teeth. Why do I keep on getting cavities? I have always been good about my hygiene. What else can I do to prevent getting more? Please help! Thanks!

Don't know why your braces lasted three years, unless you did not make many appointments. That is a long time. I get even my hardest cases done in two years.

Well, the damage was done while you had braces. Guess you could have used fluoride during orthodontic treatment. But sometimes the cement around the bands washes out, and patients get cavities in those places. Hard to say without examining you. Did you have gastric reflex or have you ever been bullemic?

Hi Dr. Kim!

My teeth were very messed up and during my first month with the braces, it was very hard for me to tolerate the pain. I insisted to have them removed, then I had them back on after a few months that is why the treatment was prolonged I guess. I became bulimic during my treatment but it was only for a short period of time.

Having braces alone is a risk factor for developing caries. It is hard to clean around the bands and with the braces in your mouth for 3 years your demineralization outweighed remineralization and you developed decay.

Have the cavities filled t decrease the bacterial burden. I would use MI paste to introduce more calcium and phosphates for your teeth and Fluoride trays whenever you visit your dentist. With the braces off and good hygiene you can minimize future caries.

I understand completely, I had braces for four years. From 9th grade until a year after my graduation. I went in for monthly check-ups, and took good care of my teeth. However my dentist refused to listen when, I would cry with pain from the tightness. So here I am 25 and my whole upper jaw haw to get all its teeth poled. There is not s single tooth that has not had the enamel rubbed up, and which caused cavity's. I hurt all the time, and threes nothing I can do about it.
