Can a tooth be infected again after a root canal?

Hello!

I've had a root canal done on my upper molar. It was infected before the root canal treatment. A couple of days after the procedure, the tooth started to hurt so bad. The top of the tooth started to swell out and the surrounding gum is tender and sore. I got throbbing pain that is unbearable. What causes extreme pain after a root canal treatment? Has anyone else felt like this after it? Thanks!

Hi Orthofix!

If a nerve tissue is left from within the tooth, there is a high chance of re-infection. Inform the dentist who performed the root canal about what you're going through. Antibiotics will not be able to eliminate the infection if a nerve tissue is still present after a root canal therapy.

Yes, it is possible for a reinfection to occur. Some teeth have very complex root canal system and it is possible that a nerve tissue is missed during root canal treatment. Go back to the dentist to this evaluated.
