Calcified fourth canal

Hello,

I recently had a root canal on tooth #3 by my regular dentist. He told me the fourth canal was calcified and has to refer me to an endodontist to finish it. I can’t afford to pay another root canal. I am jobless and I don’t have insurance. Everything is out of my pocket. Can I have the fourth canal untreated and have the crown fitted in? Please let me know if this is possible. Thanks.

I have worked as an endodontist. Sometimes we cannot fill calcified canals and have to leave them untreated. Many times the tooth survives with no symptoms. I would have a temporary crown fitted so the tooth does not fracture. If there are no symptoms for 6 months, have a permanent crown made, but have it temporarily cemented. Temporary cement can last for years. If the root canal ever fails, a dentist can remove the crown and have another try at the root canal.

Try, try, try not to lose that valuable molar tooth!

Thanks Doc! There was no infection found. I'll ask the dentist to have the tooth crowned then. I was told that there is no discount for one canal. I would still have to pay the full amount of a complete root canal treatment (1-4canals). It's a relief to know that it is possible to leave a calcified canal untreated. Thanks again!

The time spent trying to find the fourth canal is greater than the time spent filing and filling the fourth canal. Hence, no discount.
