Broken post

Hi,

Ten years ago, I had four upper front teeth crowned. Last year, the dentist found out that they were rotting underneath so I had them replaced. While he was removing them, the smell was very bad. One of them broke off. The dentist performed a root canal on this tooth and he put in a post and a plastic tooth. He put in plastic cover to the other three teeth. After about six months, the plastic post had fallen out. Only a stump was left at the gum line. It traps food particles in the root canal hole. I am now getting bad taste from there. What will happen to this tooth now? Will I lose it? I will be visiting the dentist soon but I would like to hear your thoughts about this? Any input would be highly appreciated.

If left alone, bacteria will seep in the root canal and ruin it. You will lose the tooth.

Now you know why I HATE those prefabricated posts: they break and come out. The only decent post in one custom cast to mimic the shape of the root canal, and cemented in with a very strong cement.
