Bridge Support

My dentist pulled tooth #13 because it broke and had become infected. He told me there was a lot of puss. He then put a temporary bridge over the site where the tooth was pulled from the canine tooth to #15. He said the temporary bridge would act like a bandage over the pulled tooth site. So the bridge would span the space of 4 teeth. I had #12 pulled for braces. My concern is the the canine won't be strong enough and it too will break.

I did read about root surface rule and abutment teeth and that this may not apply for healthy gums but it's the force of half of the upper side on one canine tooth would be so overwhelming that the exception wouldn't apply. Is there a case where this has worked?
