Braces for overbite

User Level:
Patient

Hello!

I am working on trying to get braces because I really want to fix my crooked teeth. I also have an overbite. My mouth usually stays open, I can't seal my lips all the way and my upper teeth are always showing. I was told I will need surgery for this and I am quite terrified. Has anyone had success with braces fixing an overbite and not get surgery? Please help! Thanks a lot!

From your explanation I would guess you meant overjet. I know many patients refer to that as overbite, it could be a bit confusing for dentists sometimes.
I would guess the overjet (horizontal distance between upper front teeth and lower front teeth) is greater that 10-12 mm. In this case braces alone would not be effective for getting the overjet ideal or close to ideal. Examples for cases needing surgery would be lower jaw is far too back or small.
I would assume you'll have a combination of braces and surgery.
If you want to know more you can google (functional appliances for adults), (treating class II division one) and (orthognathic surgery). There are some nice youtube videos too.
