Bone graft and implant in one visit

Hello everyone,

I had a root canal and a crown 3 years ago on tooth #12. It got infected. I had the crown removed, retreated, a post was put in and had a new crown put on. However, it got infected again after 1 ½ years and this time, I had undergone apicoectomy. They went in, removed some bone and infectious tissue and cleaned out around the root. Several months later, my tooth got infected again and I was put on antibiotics. This time, an oral surgeon suggested that the tooth be removed and I will be given a mouth rinse to help heal the infection. According to the surgeon, a bone graft and implant will also be done in one visit. And a crown will be put on after 2-4 weeks. Is it safe to do bone graft and implant in just one visit? How can I ensure that my tooth and gum will not be infected again? Thank you so much for your time.

It is risky to do an extraction and bone graft AND implant the same visit. It can work out all right, but you never can be sure the bone will end up near the top of the implant, where it should be. Most dentists prefer to do the extraction and graft, then wait 4-5 months to do the implant.

Judging from past experiences, I would probably put you on antibiotics prior to a bond graft and prior to the implant placement.

I agree with Henrius; extraction and graft first, then wait a few months before getting the implant. And I don't think it's a good idea to put a crown on that implant 2-4 weeks later. Much better to let the implant heal properly first, which usually takes 3 to 4 months. This is a long process, and it's best to do it right the first time around.

Thanks so much. Your answers cleared everything for me. I know what to tell my oral surgeon when I go back for my next appointment.
