My 8 year old seen her pediatric dentist today. He wants to remove two of her top teeth, the eye teeth (?) and then 3 months after the extractions he wants to fit her for a Hawley (?). Im a little confused as to why and after trying to explain it to others I feel even more confused. He stated she has 2 teeth completely sideways. Im guessing adult teeth still in the gums? Because i cannot see any in her mouth that are that crooked. Can someone help me with this? Isn't it too early for retainers since she doesn't have all of her adult teeth? And is it worth putting her through the retainer now when he said no matter what she will need braces??

Your daughter has a space deficit and the dentist is doing all he can to align the incisors and canines early in the arch. If some retainer is not done, the back teeth will dump forward and consume valuable space. At age 12, premolar teeth might still need to be extracted because of insufficient space.

My only question is why are REMOVABLE retainers being constructed in 3 months? The usual procedure is to construct fixed lingual arches IMMEDIATELY so absolutely no space loss occurs.

Im super confused now. What questions should I call back and ask specifically to help me understand what he wants to do?

Probably the two teeth sideways he is talking about are lateral incisors that are blocked from eruption by the canines because of crowding. Your child's dentist is probably advocating some sensible treatment.

1. Is the dentist sure that intevention at this time will give benefits over doing all the ortho at about age 11 1/2, when all the permanent teeth come in?

2. Why is he wanting to do removable retainers (which children often do not wear) instead of fixed metal retainers?
