Antibiotics before extraction

I have a big cavity on tooth #27. I think it was infected because I get salty taste from it. I can’t see my dentist yet because I am on vacation. From the looks of it, I think the tooth will be extracted. I’ve read many times that before extracting an infected tooth, the dentist will first put the patient into a course of antibiotics. My question is can I take antibiotic now to clear off the infection so that when I go to the dentist after my one-week vacation, I am already ready for extraction? Please advise me! Thanks.

Hello,

Antibiotics are prescribed by the dentist after you are fully evaluated and the dentist decides you have acute infection. Sometimes antibiotics are prescribed post extraction it depends on diagnoses.

I would not take antibiotics without medical consult since they do have side effects and should only be taken when necessary.

It is not often that canines become infected and cavitated there are usually the last teeth to go.
I hope this helps.

It is really sort of silly in most cases to premedicate with antibiotics before infection.

Taking antibiotics during vacation to buy you time may or may not do a thing. It the problem is an abscess, they may help. If the problem is an inflamed nerve, they will do nothing.

In general, dental problems are not solved by antibiotic use.
