Am I due for a root canal?

Hi all,

My tooth #4 has been hurting since last week and I went to the dentist to have it looked at two days ago. This tooth has decay. The dentist said the decay is on the edge of the pulp. He said he will go in and clean the decay out and if he will reach the pulp, I might need a root canal.

After cleaning it out, he said I would only need a filling. When the anesthesia wore off, I got throbbing pain and sensitivity to hot and cold. It does not hurt to biting down. Is this normal or an indication that I still need a root canal? This is my first dental work done ever so I don’t know what to expect. I would be very grateful for any advice/help.

Hello,

Give it some time for the pulp to calm down since there was cavity and then cavity was excavated by the dentist it traumatizes the tooth.
It is a good sign that you do not experience pain upon biting down. Also if the filling is composite it is known to play role in sensitivity and time may diminish the sensitivity. I hope this helps.

The pulp will either settle down, or it will die and abscess. Only time will tell. The younger you are, the more likely it will heal. But with your symptoms, I would not be optimistic.

Your answers are great! Thanks so much. I will give the tooth time to settle down then. I hope everything will turn out well. (I am really afraid of root canals). By the way, it's a composite filling.

Best Regards!
