Allergy to fixed retainer wires.

Immediately after having my fixed retainers put in I became quite ill. I just found out my doctor used Elgiloy which is Nickel (which I am allergic to) and a lot of other metals. I want these out. What can be used as a replacement that won't cause a bad reaction.

Hi janyb77!

I would go for a fibre-glass based retainer, or a removable/detachable retainer. Either way, there are numerous types and different styles of retainers so I am sure you will find a solution.

All the best!

Hello!

Talk to your orthodontist about this. Alternatives to nickel are available in the form of ceramic devices, low-nickel stainless steel, and other options. You can request one from them.

Thanks. I just learned about clear wires with no metal so that is a great option. Thanks so much.
