Abscess in Previuously Root Canaled Tooth

My #9 had a root canal thirty (30) years ago. Two days ago I started having quite a lot of pain. I thought I might have fractured the tooth (I grind in my sleep). I called my Dentist yesterday and he prescribed pain meds and antibiotics until I can get in on Monday. Today I can definitely see a swollen area above the tooth with blood seepage.

I didn't think it was possible to have an abscess above a root canaled tooth.....

Thanks for any answers.

Sometimes root canals, fail. It is rare after 30 years, but occasionally it happens.

The more likely diagnosis is as you say- fracture- based on your history of grinding.

Your dentist will put all the cluse together and make a diagnosis.

Thanks Dr. Henry

I saw my Dentist today. It is fractured; his probe went to 9mm.

I think I am going to go with a bridge.

Thanks again for your reply. This is a very useful website.
