My 17th year old needs a root canal on tooth #15. His dentist recommended that he have that tooth extracted instead of the root canal. He said the wisdom tooth would grow down and take the space of #15. Is that in fact a good idea over the root canal?

I do this sometimes. One time a root canal failed on a teen's second molar and I had to extract it. The wisdom tooth came in OK, but I had to guide it into perfect position with braces. Wisdom teeth average a little smaller in size than 2nd molars.

What you described is an acceptable compromise, and shows your dentist has your teen's best interest in mind.
