Partial Prostheses, Full Prostheses, and Dentures

The correct handling of partial prostheses, full prostheses and dentures should be done very carefully.

Insert your partial prosthesis with your hands. Do not “bite” it in, as this could cause the prosthesis to break. A partial prosthesis should be worn 23 hours a day and cleaned for one hour.

The easiest way to clean it is with soap, water and a toothbrush. Do not use any aggressive cleaning solutions because these could roughen the surface of the prosthesis up, which would then lead to increased bacterial colonization. For the same reason, the prosthesis should not be placed in a glass or in a rinsing solution!

Furthermore, it is important to clean the oral mucosa under the prosthesis with a toothbrush, as well as the gingival and the tongue. Normally, this is done automatically because of the tongue rubbing these areas while speaking and eating, but not so in individuals with prostheses.

When cleaning your prosthesis, place a towel in the washbasin or fill it with water so that your prosthesis won’t break upon impact if you drop it. As a general rule, you should take your prosthesis out after each meal in order to briefly rinse your mouth and the prosthesis with water.

If you follow these hints, you will be satisfied with your artificial teeth for a long time!
