Periodontology - The Periodontal Apparatus
“Periodontology” is the Latin word for the study of the periodontal apparatus.
The periodontal apparatus consists of:
- the gums
- the tooth root
- the bone
- and the periodontal membrane
If you suffer from bleeding gums, receding gums, fistulas, or abscesses, you should see a periodontist. These diseases can’t be treated with oral hygiene. Unfortunately, patients suffering from periodontal diseases are still being treated with oral hygiene, which is useless. For the characteristics of periodontitis, please watch the video labeled "Periodontitis Treatment". In the video "Periodontosis" you learn why this term is no longer correct nowadays.

Periodontology
So if your dentist talks about a parodontosis and/or offers you, e.g., a saliva test, laser treatment, or a flap operation prior to a conservative periodontal treatment, then you know that your gum problem would be better taken care of by a periodontist.
