Red and white balancing has to do with the interplay of color, structure and positioning of the teeth in connection with the disposition and the appearance of the gums.
The harmony and beauty of the front teeth is influenced by both the teeth and gums. „Red and white balancing“ refers to the gums („red“) and teeth („white“). If for example too much gum tissue is visible in the front (a so-called gummy smile) or the teeth appear too short or too long, this can be corrected. The process of „red and white balancing“ is applied to find the optimum ratio and appearance of teeth and gums in relation to each other. This gives the front teeth a pleasing and natural appearance.
These pictures will be used to explain some of the parameters of „beauty“ in Europe and the USA. The gums are pale pink, hug the teeth tightly and if you look closely you can see that they are dimpled (like an orange). The first tooth is the whitest, the second tooth is slightly darker, the third is darkest.
A smile is considered young and dynamic if it shows more teeth from the upper jaw than the lower jaw. The symmetry of the upper teeth is crucial to a harmonious appearance, while slightly asymmetrical teeth in the lower jaw provide a more natural look. The interplay of color saturation and surface and spatial contrast as well as transluscency and opalescence help to maintain a natural appearance.
The tiny triangles between the cutting surfaces of the teeth (the interincisal triangles) get larger towards the back of the mouth, while the contact surfaces of the teeth get smaller. The line between the two front teeth should match the center of the face, and an imaginary line should also start at the tips of the papilla and incline up towards the back. The cutting edges of the teeth are not all on one level, so the edges of the 2nd teeth are approximately 1-2mm below the imaginary line from the first to the third. The gradient of the gums does not progress smoothly either, the highest point of the 2nd teeth lies approximately 1-2mm below the imaginary line from the first to the third. Moreover, the highest point of the gums is not always in the middle, in the case of the front teeth, the highest point should lie a little bit further out. The visible part of the teeth also has a specific ratio, the front being the widest, the third the narrowest. The height and width of a tooth should also have a particular ratio, otherwise the front teeth would look like rabbit teeth. These and other criteria are what makes the smiles of the „stars“ so appealing – but you can plan this.
