Vicryl is the term used to designate the thread used to stitch up wounds, which is widely used in dentistry, due to its high degree of comfort.

Various different stitching materials are used in dentistry to close uo wounds. A distinction is made between absorbable material – such as Vicryl and non-absorbable stitching material. The non-absorbable material must be removed. The great advantage to Vicryl is not only that it can dissolve but also the comfort it provides, Vicryl is an elastic thread. The film shows how Vicryl gives way, while the other threads stick into the mouth, which is uncomfortable.

Vicryl has a high tear resistance for medium-term wounds. The stiches come in sterile packages and are easy to take out. After 21 days, Vicryl still retains 50% of its original tear resistance, and moreover it is easy to handle and the knots can be positioned securely . After about 56 – 70 days Vicryl is absorbed completely.
Here you can see an oral wound being adapted using Vicryl, sice oral wounds usually heal after 7 days, it is not necessary to wait until the thread is absorbed completely. It is better to remove the threads after 7 days, even though it would eventually be absorbed. The thread can enable contamination by food, which can lead to inflammation of the gums.
