In dentistry, in particular in the field of Endodontics, a dental dam (sometimes known as a "Kofferdam"--from German) is a thin sheet of latex used to protect dental work from contamination, saliva & bacteria of the oral cavity. The area where dental composites are being placed needs to be dry, since some materials are very sensitive to moisture during processing. The rubber dam keeps saliva as well as bacteria away from the working areas. The dental dam is fixed on the tooth with a bracket. You will feel a strain but usually no pain.
