Periodontosis
(1679 Views)
Periodontosis is the false term for a diseased infection of the periodontal apparatus. In medicine the ending “-ose” stands for disorders caused by metabolism whereas the ending “-itis” stands for inflammation. The term arthrosis for example refers to a non-inflamed degradation of one or more joints, e.g. due to a wrong strain, whereas arthritis means joint inflammation, e.g. after an accident and bacterial contamination. Periodontosis is different to periodontitis and therefore has to be treated differently. How could the name periodontosis slip in? There is a historical reason: In the past it was impossible to isolate bacteria in the gum pockets and no inflammation was thought to exist. That's why the medical ending -ose was chosen.
