Iodoform Strip
(27262 Views)
In dentistry, an iodine strip, also called Iodoform strip, is a small fleece cloth used for wound drainage, and/or wound dressing for instance after dental surgeries. These disinfecting strips are soaked in iodine form powder. In this video you see a patient with an abscess due to a periodontics problem and how the dental strip is used for draining the tooth abscess. The Iodoform strip allows the blood to flow off without forming any heavy bruises and disinfecting the wound at the same time. During normal tooth extractions it is not recommended to use these types of strips, since there is a danger of ripping the bruise and may subsequently lead to wound healing disorders. Generally the iodine strip is removed one day after surgery. Watch this video to see an Iodoform strip in action!

With larger abscesses we use a Penrose drain of varying sizes to keep the wound open to facilitate draining. We stitch such a drain(s) in place and they often penetrate through the neck from the oral cavity in more significant infections. Steven Koos DDS, MD
