What to do with broken post?

Good day Doctor!

I had a root canal done and a crown five years ago. Last week, while I was eating, I felt something broke off inside my mouth. The pain was horrible. The tooth became wiggly. When I move the tooth, I can feel that the post move against my gums, too. I think the post was broken. The gum above the crowned tooth has swollen. I feel pain in my eyes, jaw and ear. A visit to the dentist is out of my budget for now because I am jobless. Would it be okay to address this later? What can I do for now to keep this from getting worse? Please advice!

Thank you for your time!

Hi mariellove!

It sounds to me like you have a root fracture. Usually in such cases the tooth needs to be removed.

A basic tooth extraction does not cost too much so I wouldn’t wait around too long; moreover, the consequent infections and dangers can lead to the loss of more bone material. This then means the subsequent treatment and therapy is much more difficult as well as expensive.

Ideally you should have the problem tooth extracted and let the wound heal properly. Then save up for a tooth implantation.

All the best!
