Swollen jaw

Hello,

I have a swollen jaw towards my chin. My gums and teeth were aching as well. The dentist said I have an abscess under my front tooth. She put me on antibiotics. I have been taking it for three days now but the swelling has not gone down yet. I also still have the throbbing in my front tooth and gums. How long will the swelling take to go down with the help of the antibiotics? Will the infection be cleared after the 7-day course? The tooth will be pulled next week as the dentist said it was badly infected. I’ve heard that the anesthetic will not be effective with the presence of infection. Is this true? I am so worried that the extraction will become painful and difficult. Please help.

Hey lookwell,

Sorry to hear your in pain. From what I can gather, this could be a periapical abscess that your tooth is affected with. Without a proper history, I can't be sure of the reason behind it. However, since getting it extracted is the procedure advised by your dentist, I'm assuming the infection has progressed too far (or depending on the nature of this abscess) to be surgically aspirated.

Your swelling will subside once the tooth is out. The antibiotics will help control the infection meanwhile.

I’ve heard that the anesthetic will not be effective with the presence of infection.

That's right. An anesthetic will have a hard time penetrating your nerves due to a pH imbalance (acidic) caused due to the presence of infection. There are other ways getting around that but your better off controlling the infection for a better prognosis post-extraction wise.

Why do you want to pull a front tooth???????????????

If the dentist would lance the swelling and let the pus drain out, it will heal a lot more quickly.
