Swollen gums after a crown

Hi Doc!

When I had a temporary crown on, I developed severe pain. My dentist said I had an abscess and he put me on antibiotics for ten days. Last week I got my permanent crown and until today, my gums are still very sore. I've been rinsing with warm salt water. Is this normal? I am afraid I am not clear of infection yet.

Please help!

Hi jenanne!

It must be established where the infection is stemming from – the source of the problem. The antibiotics will remedy your symptoms, but will not tackle the cause.

It could be an endodontic issue, so you should visit a endodontic specialist (I assume that is the case.) It could also be a periodontic issue, in which case you should se a periodontist!

Most importantly, you must treat the cause and not just the symptoms!

All the best!

Hi Doc!

Based from the examination, I had a damaged nerve. I am scheduled for a root canal in a couple of days. Thank you for your answer.
