Root tip left out after a tooth extraction

Hello Checkdent!

This is a great site.:-)

I hope you can help me with my problem.

I visited my dentist two days ago for a tooth extraction. Unfortunately, he was unable to get all the root out. He tried so hard without success. I ended up having a very much swollen face. My dentist prescribed me antibiotics. He said the root fragment is small and it is okay to just leave it there. He said my body will just dissolve it over time. Is this correct? Please advice me as I am worried that it may cause complication in the future.

Thank you in advance for your answers!

Dear steffpress!

Leftover root fragments are not uncommon in this type of treatment; don’t worry about it – in most cases your body can deal it with just fine.

The root fragment should either be reabsorbed, or it will stay dormant and unreactive in the bone.

Long after the healing process and acute feelings of discomfort are gone, I would check up on the area via X-ray, within the first couple of years.

It is important that you are informed as to what happens in these cases and what the best course of action is.

All the best!
