Root canal treated tooth getting dark!!!

Hello,

It’s me again, unfortunately!

As you already know, I have a root canal treated anterior tooth in the upper jaw. My problem is that yesterday, (according to the new photos), it seems to be turning dark and brown. I felt like crying. I used to have a beautiful white smile and now I can see that it’s getting darker in the mirror.

What would you recommend I do in order to have a nice smile again? Should I have the tooth bleached or fitted with a crown? Maybe a veneer?

How long does bleaching last and is it really as harmful as everybody says?

Also, what should I expect to pay for just the one tooth? I’m a poor student.

Before I forget, the crown looks a bit “transparent,” meaning that I can “see through it” at the lower edge. I’m sure you know what I mean.

Unfortunately, one problem is that I’m in the United States for 10 months and I have NO idea what they will do to me here. So, before I go to a doctor, I would like to get some advice from you!

P.S.: Before I forget, it still hurts intermittently and I still have a numb feeling.

Thank you very much,

Tanabe

Dear Tanabe,

P.S.: Before I forget, it still hurts intermittently and I still have a numb feeling.

The best approach would probably be...

* renewing the root canal treatment
* internal bleaching

It shouldn’t hurt. Aesthetics should be secondary. As for costs, that depends on the practitioner, but I think you would have to calculate between 100-400 €...

Hello.

How should the root canal treatment be renewed? Will he just drill around again and remove the remaining stuff?

I have sent you the images:

I hadn’t taken any antibiotics until now, but I will begin taking them today. Maybe everything will go away then? What do you think?

Would you advise me against playing sports? I play American Football here and I wouldn’t want to stop playing under (almost) any circumstance.

Kind regards,

Tanabe

Dear Tanabe,

Participating in sports isn’t a problem in itself. It’s important that you don’t bite onto the tooth so that the assumed “bite trauma” calms down. Antibiotics would be good way to support this process. Should the discomfort continue, I would have a dental CT. The root’s filling itself looks good, but maybe the root was torn lengthwise.

Ahhh, now I understand. Thank you very much.

I know that health should always be the most important factor, but I hardly want to smile now because the tooth is a bit darker. Would it make a difference if I had the tooth bleached as well? Or would you strongly advise against this?

How long should I take antibiotics for? I have 16 film-coated tablets of “Clinda-Saar 600 mg” here.

I’ve started to take two every day. Unfortunately, my dentist didn’t tell me how often I should take them or for how long! But I have to say that I do feel a CLEAR improvement. And I only started taking them yesterday evening!

I’ve been taking the antibiotics since Saturday evening and I have the feeling that the throbbing has increased in strength. Is this possible? I’m slowly getting a creepy feeling thinking about this tooth...

Kind regards from the United States,

Tanabe

Dear Tanabe,

I know that health should always be the most important factor, but I hardly want to smile now because the tooth is a bit darker. Would it make a difference if I had the tooth bleached as well? Or would you strongly advise against this?

First, the tooth should calm down... afterwards, an internal bleaching would be sensible.

How long should I take antibiotics? I have 16 film-coated tablets of “Clinda-Saar 600 mg” here.

Whatever your physician recommended. If the active ingredient is Clindamycin, then the usual dosage is 4x1 (300 mg) for 10 days, i.e. 2x1 (600 mg) for 10 days.

I have been taking the antibiotics since Saturday evening and I have the feeling that the throbbing has increased in strength. Is this possible? I’m slowly getting a creepy feeling thinking about this tooth...

I think the throbbing comes from your “creepy” feeling instead of from the antibiotics... all the best...

Good morning,

Unfortunately, I only have 16 film-coated tablets, and yesterday and the day before, I took three instead of two (I read in the package leaflet that that would be possible as well, BEFORE you answered me).

From now on, I will only take two per day as you recommended. However, my antibiotics will only last me a total period of six days!!!!!!! (Since I only had 16 tablets.)

Is that too short a period? If so, I will see a doctor tomorrow and ask him for a prescription, if that’s possible. Or is there any other possibility?

I thought about the pain/strange feeling again, and I’m 100% sure that it’s increased A LOT in strength even though I’m taking antibiotics. This can’t be normal, can it? What if it’s not an inflammation but a lengthwise break instead?

Thank you very much. You are my only hope right now!!!!

Dear Tanabe,

I would make sure to visit a dentist because a reliable assessment of the situation is NOT possible via the web. Since you are apparently very concerned, a visit to the doctor would make a lot of sense. We administer Dalacin for 10 days and penicillin for five days.

Have a dental CT done; then it would be possible to make a better determination.

Thank you,

I will simply make an appointment. I think that I will get one next week or so. They seem to be pretty booked here.

As I said, you were able to help me a lot!

I hope you have a nice day.

Hello,

It’s me again. I went to see a dentist today. And his solution was that he doesn’t have one.

After a pleasant examination and conversation, he sent me to the endodontic department.

The experience (i.e., the examination) set me back $45. And NOTHING was done.

I will still take the antibiotics until tomorrow and I will stop taking them then.

Kind regards,

Tanabe
