Jaw pain after a basic dental cleaning, is this normal?

Hello Checkdent,

I went to the dentist about a week ago for a routine cleaning. Since then, my jaw has been aching right below my ear. If I have to open my mouth wide, (for taking a bite of a food or yawning), it hurts. I expected the pain to subside after a few days, but it still hurts until now. Is this normal? Thank you for your help.

Best Regards,

Ace

Dear achel!

Sounds to me like you are suffering from acute jaw joint effusion, resulting from holding your mouth open for too long.

It should subside on its own, just take extra care of your jaw joint over the next few days; no chewing gum, no foods that require vigorous chewing etc.

You must be familiar with the mystery of the joints of the human body - how one person runs a marathon and is fine, another person runs around the block and gets swollen knees!

If your symptoms don't get better after 1 week, it's time to visit your doctor!

Thanks, Doc. It's good to know I do not have to worry that much:-)
