Infection after a filling replaced

Dear Doc,

My filling had cracked two months ago and I had it replaced with the white filling. After the procedure, the gum in that area became swollen. One week had already passed but the gum is still very sore and I started to feel pain and sensitivity in the filled tooth. Is it possible that there could be something wrong with the new filling? Does it sound like the gum is infected?

I appreciate any help!

Dear cloudone!

It could be that the filling is still sticking out a bit; you can tell when your dental floss gets snagged on it, for example.

If this is the case, which is not uncommon, it results in bits of food getting stuck under the filling which can lead to gum infections.

Ideally you should visit your dentist, and s/he can check the state of the filling, and make the necessary modifications and repairs.

All the best!

Thanks a lot Doc!

It turned out the cavity is too deep and the root is infected. I will undergo root canal treatment.
