How long should temporary crowns last?

I had a temporary crown put in when I was 12, so, some 15 years ago. The dentist said it would last about a year. I still have it. Is this something I pursue replacing now or should I just chock it up to good work on the dentists' part?

You must have had a great dentist. Temporary crowns to NOT fit as well as well made final crowns and rarely last that long. A rough edge on a temporary can lead to gum disease. Plastic temporary crowns wear down much faster than natural teeth allowing the root to grow out of alignment. Metal temporary crowns never have smooth edges.

Hi Spacut,

I wouldn't keep a temporary crown too long. It can have leakage which can cause bacteria/infection.
