Heat or ice for an abscessed tooth?

Hi all!

I went to the dentist yesterday because I was feeling a lot of pain in one of my lower molars. He said I have an abscessed tooth. He gave me antibiotics. He told me I have two options, a root canal or an extraction. I chose the latter and I am scheduled next week. Today, I woke up with swollen gums and face. I don't think the antibiotic is working. What could keep the swelling down? Should I use ice or heat? Please give me instructions as to what to do.

I would highly appreciate your answers!

Hello Lonelyday!

It is better to use ice on an abscessed tooth. It will help subside the swelling and the pain. You can also rinse with warm salt water, it will help with the infection.

Hello!

I've had 2 abscesses in my life and the only thing that stopped them from hurting was holding a hot water in my mouth. I think it depends on each person's case.
