Gum Fistula

Dear all,

I have a gum fistula on one of my upper molars. The tooth does not ache but there is a pus discharging from it. I went to see a dentist today. He said, the tooth is dead and the only option is extraction. He told me I can keep the tooth until there's a pain, which will indicate the need for extraction. This tooth had a root canal and a filling done several years ago.

Is extraction the best way to go? The tooth is not giving me any pain. Once the tooth is extracted, I will not get a replacement because I do not have an insurance and I can't afford an implant or a bridge yet. Please help me on what to do! I greatly appreciate your advice! Thank you so much in advance!

Hello. If you are unable to afford and implant then your best option is to wait until you feel pain from the tooth. If you leave the open gap your teeth will begin to slowly shift. Did your dentist prescribe you antibiotics to help stop the discharge? You may also experience malodor in your mouth if infection is not contained. There no other way to save your tooth if it is no longer vital.
