Extreme fear of dentists!

Hello,

I have a very, very severe fear of dentists and, for a long time, have been looking for a dentist specializing in patients with such anxieties who can take care of me. This is why I thought I would ask you whether this is the right place and whether you could help me finally get my fear under control and not panic when I’m sitting in the waiting room (if I get that far at all)?

I have not been to a dentist in years and I would like to have nice teeth and don’t want them to get even worse!

At the moment, I am faced with the additional problem that my wisdom tooth on the upper right wants to break through and has been hurting for about three days, and not just a little bit either. I really hope that the wisdom tooth has space and that it can come out soon. My lower wisdom teeth have been out for a while now, but they did not hurt half as much as this one now. That’s why I have a terrible fear that it might not have enough space after all and that it cannot get out and might have to be pulled (just thinking about that makes me nauseous)!

I hope very much that this is the right place!

Thank you very much,

Emhof

I know that you will get your fear under control yourself; I will only accompany you a little bit of the way. Fear is normal, especially in cases of bad experiences. Sometimes, memories of bad experiences develop their own momentum and create a giant, terrifying image – but this can be controlled. Don’t worry!

The best thing to do is to come in for a visit. We will look at it together and discuss it. If you feel that we are not the right place for you, hang in there and try the next one! The winner falls down just as many times as the loser – the only difference is that the winner gets back up.

Yes, I find it takes time, patience and definitely find a dentist who is highly qualified with these issues. Sooner or later you have to face your fear, a quality dental technician will understand the seriousness and help you overcome your fear!

try dental fear central, a forum for dental phobics with support and a find a dentist section recommened by other phobic patients. Not all dentists are created equal. Some cause fear, some add to it and some help you work through it.

I almost never encounter a patient who is not hurt by keeping his wisdom teeth, unless he has lost molars in front of them that leaves sufficient space. I have got an article about the subject on my practice website.

Sedation by IV or general anesthesia is a possibility, but it will cost you big bucks.

Occasionally patients find hypnotherapy helpful. Some of my fearful patients can be sedated enough with oral Valium + laughing gas to get the work done, and this costs very little.

Hello!

I had exactly the same problem! I finally talked with a friend who told me that in Mexico, their way to work is really more human-oriented.
He told me about a dental spa in which the experience is a mix between a spa and a dentist. I can tell you that the results are so great and the experience is unique, I'll go back there if needed.

PS: I went there with healthcaremexico.net

There are many good comments in this post, and you will want to search for a dentist that you are comfortable with. This might eliminate a lot of your anxiety. Other than that, there are sedation techniques available. Make sure that you find a qualified dentist in the field.

It is important to go to a dentist you are comfortable with, so your fears and apprehensions can be put to rest. However, it is also important to arm yourself with the knowledge regarding your options when it comes to facing your fear of the dentist. There is a comprehensive post about Dental Anxiety/Anxiety on thisisdentistry.co.uk , which was very helpful in making me realize a lot of things about my extreme dentist fear...

It is important to feel comfortable when you go to a dentist. You should be able to comfortably convey your problem to your dentist. It is really nice to be visiting your informative post.
