Crown or Overlay?

Hello! I recently went to the dentist for a cleaning and found out an amalgam filling in one of my upper molars has left 3 cracks in my tooth. The dentist recommended an porcelain overlay to fix the tooth and told me it is better than a crown. Yet, when I talked to another dentist, he told me he sees a lot of problems with overlays and the crown is a better option. What is a better choice? Crown or overlay?

Conservative gold onlays are great restorations. Porcelain onlays are riskier because of the possibility of fracture. The less you cut a tooth the better. The real question is whether the tooth needs any sort of crown or not.
