Broken tooth around filling

Two weeks ago, I got a permanent filling for my root canal treated tooth (an upper front tooth). Later that day, one side of an upper side tooth broke off around the filling. I went to the dentist to have it fixed. He refilled the tooth and built it back on. Has anyone had this procedure done? How long on the average does a tooth, which has undergone such procedure, last? I was just so worried that the tooth will come off anytime and it will not be saved anymore. Thank you in advance for your help.

Your dentist was trying to save your money doing a composite filling, instead of post and crown. However, if it breaks again, a post and crown will probably need to be done.
