I was diagnosed with a periodontal disease and I am working hard to prevent it from getting worse. I also have crowded teeth at the bottom that I wanted to be fixed through braces. I was just wondering if I could still brush and floss well with the braces. I don’t want my periodontal problem to get worse by being unable to brush and floss regularly with the braces on. Is it okay to get braces even if I have a gum disease? Please advice. Thank you very much.

It is difficult, but not impossible, to use floss with braces. Usually I have patients in braces substitute a Water-Pik and electric toothbrush like Sonicare for flossing, and they control their gum disease quite well.

That's great to know Dr. Henry:-) I just want to make sure my periodontal treatment will not be hindered with the braces on. Thanks for your time!:-)
